Most common ancestry by American state (Estados Unidos de América, continente)

This map shows the most common ancestry in each American state. The most common ancestry is German in almost the half of the states being dominant in the Northern region of the US, German-Americans are descendants of German immigrants to the United States.

The second most common ancestry is African-American. The majority of African-Americans are descendants of freed slaves after the American civil war in 1865, nowadays African-Americans represent the 13% of the American population although they are more present in the Southern region of the country, the state with the lowest percentage of African-American population is Vermont and the state with the highest percentage is the District of Columbia.

The 3rd most common ancestry is Irish, some Irish-Americans are distinguished by the stereotypical red hair originary from Ireland and Celtic regions of Uk. Irish ancestry is more common where the first Irish immigrants to the US established, mostly in the Eastern Coast after the Great Irish famine in 1852. Mexican ancestry comes 4th, Mexicans and Mexican descendants are well spread throughout the country but they are higher percentage of the population in South Western states, some of them former Mexican regions annexed by USA in 1848. The 2 reasons of the Mexican diaspora in the South of the US is recent immigration from Mexico which is more common but also some locals are descendants of the Mexicans who lived there when USA annexed the land. 5th we have Italian ancestry, Italian immigration was more recent and the immigrated people who came mainly in late 19th century or early 20th century settled in the Eastern coas where they are now a big community. A great example of this is the neighbourhood of Little Italy in the city of New York. 6th we have the people with English ancestry who are through all the country but just a majority in Utah, Idaho and Maine, contrary as many people think, the large majority of Americans are not descendants of English settlers who were the first to arrive but they were outnumbered by other groups. 7th comes Native American ancestry being just dominant in Oklahoma due to the replacement of Native Americans there by the American Government.

Nowadays they live there although it was not their ancestral land. Native Americans make up just the 2% of American population according to US Census Bureau. Those are all the 7 ancestries who are dominant in at least one of the 50 mainland US States. There are a lot of other big communities and ancestries in the US but they are dominant in any of the 50 States for example French, Spanish, Filipino, Vietnamese, Scandinavian and many other ancestries.
